Tobias Marutschke “Work without time and place constraints”

How many of us have ever thought to skip office life, and to enjoy flexible working time from a desirable place? And how many of us skeptically reacted to this idea as on something not realistic? Is it really possible to achieve time and space freedom, while not giving up the business and financial ambitions? In this short story, we would like to share an amazing mindset of our friend regarding the topic and his bold business goals, which go along with time and place freedom.

Tobias Marutschke is a tax consultant, born and raised in Germany. As our friend says, German society is quite conservative in the way how people work, live, and even enjoy their lives. This happens unconsciously how people under the pressure of society develop the behavior model, which does not deviate that much from the commonly accepted pattern. In Germany, the pattern of “successful” people comprises the next steps: 1) professional training after high school; 2) degree at the university; 3) stable office life of 40 hours per week; 4) senior management position or own business afterward. It does not seem that bad some of you might argue. But is it really what you want from life?

Life happens when we leave our comfort zone and let ourselves be engaged in new adventures we have not experienced before. For me, this happened when I moved to Brazil for half a year to do a semester abroad in Fortaleza. This was an amazing time for me, first of all, because I saw different the life people live there, values Brazilians have in the focus, and many other things which I fell in love with.

After that amazing time, Tobias came back home to Germany to complete his Master’s degree in Economics and finally to start his career. However, left in his mind touch of Brazil brought up a question Tobias needed to answer for his own good: “Do I really want to be absorbed by things the society claims to be good for me? Or I want to get my freedom of enjoying life around me?”. This question was not that easy to answer, since it is always hard to admit things that do not go along with commonly accepted standards.

And it's even harder to take a step forward to those things we really want.

My answer was that I want to live a truly full life by combining values and life experiences which make me better off. But how to make it happen or to make even the first step forward? These things were really hard for me to figure out. Time flies, and I didn’t want to lose it in long contemplation about ways forward. So, I needed to come up with a reasonable decision on how to start heading to my dream life as soon as possible.

The solution Tobias came up with was to link right away his first career steps with a big goal of time and place freedom. “I came to understand that the first job shouldn’t determine necessarily the profession you are going to work forever. But nevertheless, the work you start should be able to give you the sense of the future goal and the viable transfer point to the new opportunities you are dreaming about”, adds Tobias.

Good skills and high interest in finance happened to be the lift up for Tobias. Instead of trapping himself in a binding relationship with an employer, he decided to start working on his own, which was the first step made towards the desired state of the place and time. He bounced to financial and tax consulting. “I came to the conclusion that it is a quite viable solution since I can work on myself by providing consultations and bookkeeping services to my clients. Especially, in the service sphere, we are able just to work online almost from each place on the Earth, without being present in the office”, comments Tobias.

A profession of tax adviser gives Tobias quite enough space for mobility since many procedures with public authorities take place online. The clients are also able to send just scan-copies of necessary documents per email, that does not require any physical presence or contact. This ensures the possibility for Tobias to work some time per year from the place he wants, which he gladly uses.

For winter time I usually fly to Brazil and stay there for three months. In this time, all I need to support my clients and ensure their business runs well in Germany is just a laptop. But still most of the yearly time I need to be in Germany, due to formalities involved in my profession and some clients’ wish to work in an old-fashion way.

How silly it would not sound, but the COVID-19 situation appeared to be beneficial for Tobias from some point of view, even though his mobility is limited. These benefits came in face of the digitalization of many procedures with fiscal authorities and complete online communication with his clients. “I hope that this working mode will remain after the situation gets back to normal again”, says Tobias.

Step by step Tobias prepares himself for the new opportunities he is passionate about.

I want to connect people and cultures. I want to open the eyes of many people to how beautiful the world is and they should not be afraid to ask for more. Definition of home changes and everyone can have a couple of homes in the countries he or she desires. Therefore, in near future, I want to shift towards the real estate business and provide people from both Brazil and Germany a secure chance to acquire real estate in a perfect place they will be happy. Meanwhile, I am very passionate about coaching and see my mission to motivate people on new deeds and achievements.

Our friend sees the future of his projects in the digital dimension, where he will be able to fulfill people’s needs all around the world online. And what is the most important, this will be a key to obtain absolute freedom of place and time!
