But that's not all. Imagine your dream like a house you want to build. You know how big it should be, how it should look like, which materials and furniture you want to have. But you will not be able to build this house without the right tools and actions.

Old habits = old ways that lead to old doors ...

We all know that if we always repeat the same thing, we won't get an unexpected result. A habit is developed when we have repeated something many times, so we are not even aware of it. It a useful trick of our brain to save capacity, so that we don't use too much willpower for things we do on a daily basis, like making breakfast, brushing your teeth, or doing your laundry. It gets comfortable to always follow the same habits. But unfortunately, this makes it also so hard to change the existing habits that you have developed and consolidated sometimes over many years.
That's why your habits are key to a successful and fulfilled life. If you don't change, your environment, work situation, and overall life won't change either.
It's as simple as that.
But how to change your habits permanently?
Habits are not only habits. It's a bit more complex than that, and explaining the whole mechanism behind would extend this article. So let's keep it short and easy. There are many theories that explain how you can change your habits, but we want to point out the following.
James Clear has discovered another way how to build habits. He says that changes are the compound effect of many small decisions you made, like doing five situps daily, eating a healthy meal once per day, and so on.
He calls these small habits "atomic habits".
In his so-called book that we recommend you as an excellent read, he reveals how these tiny changes in behavior will grow into life-changing outcomes and more importantly, how you can make use of it.
So if you are interested in changing your life for the better with the help of micro-habits, check it out. The book is available on Amazon.
Which habits should you develop?
So now that you know that it's all about making small changes in your behavior to develop lasting habits, you want to know which habits you need to become successful.

1. Organize your Life
It's much easier to imagine your goal that knowing the necessary steps to make it happen.
Therefore, get yourself a calendar, or a planner, and write down your goal. Then think about the activities that will get you to that goal.
For example, you want to get the best grade possible (A) in the biology exam.
Your goal: Get an A in the biology exam
Steps to take:
- get all lecture notes
- organize the notes by topics
- spend 1 hour per day studying the notes
- check twice per week how my learning progress is going
Now it's much clearer for you what you have to do, and you can think about the best time when to fit in the activities into your day.
2. Do it!
Now that you have organized yourself and your goals, it's about action.
If you only plan, and never start to do, you won't achieve any changes or success.
In case you want more guidance on how to start pursuing your dreams, you can read more in our articles about passion.
3. Sleep well and long enough
Many people underestimate the importance and quality of your sleep.
The overall recommendation is to sleep 8-9 hours per day (or night), but even if you sleep 10 hours or more, it might not be enough. Because it's not only about the quantity but also about the quality.
Often you do not even know that when you feel down, less energized, and tired it might be due to some factors that decrease the quality of your sleep.
Some reasons can be:
- a too light environment
- top high temperature in your bedroom
- to high blue light impact before going to sleep
- sleep apnea
- vitamin deficiency
- nightmares
- blood sugar variations

4. Exercise regularly
Movement is life.
Think about how many hours per day you spend sitting or lying. If you think about your work, eating time, TV time, and sleep time, the number might be quite shocking.
Our bodies can compensate a lot, but one day, you will get the paycheck for this bad treatment.
Or, you do something for your physical and mental health by moving yourself!
Find an activity that you enjoy, preferably in combination with getting some fresh air, and move! It can be cycling, walking, running, playing football, going to the gym – whatever you enjoy and makes you feel good.
Even if it can be hard in the beginning, stick to your movement habit and you will be rewarded with a fit and healthy body!
5. Eat well
Exercise and nutrition go hand in hand. If you do sports, but live on fast food, you won't feel much better.
If you want to feel energized, clear in mind, and be productive, eat food that helps you to reach your goals.
